Morocco

The country I chose to focus on is Morocco, not only because it’s a destination with a rich cultural

history, but also because it holds personal value for me being that I'm half Moroccan. This semester, I'll be moving to Morocco, which makes this study especially exciting. For me, it's a journey of learning about my culture, and I look forward to experiencing the country firsthand while learning more about its geography.Located in Northern Africa, Morocco is a melting pot of different landscapes that are captivating, ranging from the Atlas Mountains with its snow-capped peaks to the scorching Sahara Desert with its vast golden sands. One of the most intriguing aspects of Morocco is its diverse climate and topography, which can be dramatically different depending on where you are. Morocco’s geography isn’t just beautiful—it’s essential to the way life has developed here.

Morocco also has extreme weather variations. In the summer months, temperatures can soar to 116°F (47°C) or higher, particularly in the interior and desert regions. In contrast, the winters in Morocco can be quite cold, particularly in the Atlas Mountains, where temperatures can drop to 28°F (-2°C) or lower, with snow covering the landscape. This range of temperatures not only makes Morocco an interesting place to study but also offers a unique challenge to those living there.

This semester, I’m looking forward to not just exploring the country’s landscapes, but also learning about its geographic diversity in the context of its social and cultural fabric. Morocco’s unique position between the Sahara and the Mediterranean, its mountain ranges, deserts, and coastline, offer a lens through which we can better understand the relationship between people and place, and how geography shapes identity, economy, and culture.

Hazards are a warning that something can be harmful and dangerous. Like a red flag and a beach can warn that the ocean is dangerous and no one should swim. Disasters are when the hazards impact people, property, and the environment with damage or loss. Catastrophes are large-scale disasters that cause extreme destruction and long-term effects while high deaths.
